To ensure the best possible solution is implemented we define alternative solutions as well. By defining different ways to improve the same situation you will be stimulated to brainstorm and challenge the initial solution. Perhaps you find alternatives that will have more impact, or are more easy to implement.
Based on the list of initial and alternative solutions an impact x effort analysis can be done to select the solution that is most easy to implement and has a high impact. Adjust the proposed improvement section accordingly.
Tools and tips
Defining alternative solutions and selecting the preferred one can be done in two steps:
1. Define alternative solutions; Use a small brainstorming session to list alternative solutions. Brainstorming is an idea generating process in which you involve different colleagues to find possible solutions. The objective is to generate as much ideas as possible and stimulate creative thinking. Remember, in this stage all ideas are good, don't criticise but find ways to build upon ideas from someone else.
2. Select the best solution; Select the best solutions by looking at the effort of implementation and impact of a solution. From the list of alternatives you will now select the solution that you propose to implement. The Impact x Effort matrix is an effective tool to facilitate this process. For each solution you define how easy it is to implement (Effort) and to what extend it will improve the process/ performance (Impact). For example; solutions that can be implemented on board by the crew themselves are easy to implement (Low effort), while solutions that require new equipment or tools are much more difficult and require more time (High effort). Select improvements that are in control of the team themselves.
